John McCain’s Problem - And How He Can Solve It

(Disclaimer: I am a moderate-to-conservative Democrat, and an avid Obama supporter. I’m writing this in the vain hope that this information may somehow get to some McCain staffers, and make this election cycle more interesting.)

The news media can’t seem to get enough of John McCain’s perennial struggle with social conservatives. It’s true that he’s never gotten along with the religious right; it’s also true that, in the past, he’s won votes by appealing to moderates and independents and banking on his war record and national security prestige - avoiding entirely his discomfort with social conservatives. These two facts seem to be universally recognized and reported.

Let’s do a little math, shall we?
2 (John McCain and the religious right have never played nice.)
+
2 (John McCain has never needed them for an election.)
=
4 (John McCain should continue to ignore them for this election.)

Now, let’s look at Decision 2008 for a moment. If Hillary Clinton gets the Democratic nod, her persistently high unfavorables willl automatically send social conservatives to the polls, simply to keep someone they perceive as a “devil woman” from sitting in the Oval Office; furthermore, Sen. Clinton has pretty limited appeal to moderates and independents, instead building her successful senatorial campaigns (and thus far, her presidential campaign) not by appealing to independents, but by relying on traditional Democratic voting blocs - Hispanics, unions, blue-collar workers, and women. In a McCain/Clinton contest, McCain will take the lion’s share of independent voters, which, when combined with fiscal conservatives, moderate and liberal Republicans, and national-security hawks (all groups who have always voted for Sen. McCain), should deliver him an Electoral College (and perhaps even a popular vote) victory in November. This is one reason why Sen. McCain recently said that, between the two, he’d much prefer to run against Sen. Clinton in November.

McCain’s big fear, of course, is not his friend and colleague; it’s the junior senator from Illinois. This fear is, of course, entirely justified - Sen. Obama’s appeal among moderates, independents, liberals, millenials, and unlikely voters is a perfect storm for any moderate Republican opponent. Sen. Obama draws people to the polls like honey draws flies. Example: After sweeping the Chesapeake primaries, Sen. McCain spoke to a cheering crowd of 250; after doing the same thing on the other side of the aisle, Sen. Obama delivered a rousing speech to a screaming, bra-flinging crowd of 17,000.

Facts like this obscure a larger point - moderates aren’t solidly in Sen. Obama’s pocket. He may have the most fanatics, but even Sen. Obama’s legions of fanatics make up a nearly statistically insignificant portion of his to-date accumulated 10 million votes.

To understand why moderates have been voting for Sen. Obama - and why and how they can be poached by Sen. McCain - requires no great analytical leap. Indeed, the reasons for both are already on the lips and fingertips of pundits and avid pundit-readers (like myself): Sen. Obama is fresh and inspiring; but is he too inexperienced to effectively manage the chaos of the White House in wartime?

Personally, I have faith in Sen. Obama’s quick learning ability - and the overall resiliency of the White House bureaucracy - to believe that he can be an effective first-term President; but my faith doesn’t extend to the rest of the moderate bloc. Sen. McCain, by contrast, has impeachable experience, and an aisle-crossing ability that will inevitably drive conservative Democrats (the pro-life, pro-prayer, pro-gun Democrats of Tennesse’s 4th District, for example) to vote in droves for Sen. McCain in November.

This same appeal can pull in a significant portion of moderates who may doubt Sen. Obama’s ability - at this early stage of his career, anyway - to govern effectively; and if Sen. McCain does get their votes, he will probably win in November. But if he wants those moderate votes, he’s going to have to do a few things:
1) Campaign to moderates - hard.
2) Spurn the religious right.
3) Stay true to himself and his record.

None of these are tall orders for the man known as “Straight-Talk McCain.”

This website is being redesigned…

…but not really.

I’ve finally figured out what the f*** I’m going to do with this damn thing. I don’t have time/energy to just blog about all my feelings and all that bullshit. Plus, I have a girlfriend now, so she sort of acts as a waystation for all my pointless rambling. But it occurred to me today that I can really make this a reflection of law school; so that’s what I’m going to do. To that end, two new categories have been added:

Spirit - this category is taking the place of the old category “Reflections.” These posts will tend more toward that emotional crap that everyone fills their blogs with. No promises, but I’ll try to keep them centered on the experience of being a law student. The first new post in this category will hopefully be a look-back on my first semester, which ends tomorrow with the conclusion of my last final.
Letter - this category is brand new. These posts will be academic explanations of legal concepts and principles. The first new post in this category will probably be an explanation of the Rule Against Perpetuities.

That’s all for now…I still have a final to study for.

Hello again

There’s no excuse for the paucity of posts in this place, and I offer none; nor will I offer some half-hearted apology accompanied by a quarter-hearted promise to post more. I will post when I will post, and I hold no grudges against anyone for lacking the requisite infinitude of patience necessary to maintain interest in this rarely-used form of expression.

As anyone knows who has lived a sufficiently long/hard/interesting life, sometimes only a song can capture the true essence of an emotion. What I’m feeling in this moment cannot be adequately described by any combination of descriptors. So, instead of my awkward and gangly prose, I give you this - “Born” by Over the Rhine.

I was born to laugh
I learned to laugh through my tears
I was born to love
I’m gonna learn to love without fear

Pour me a glass of wine
Talk deep into the night
Who knows what we’ll find

Intuition, deja vu
The Holy Ghost haunting you
Whatever you got
I don’t mind

Put your elbows on the table
I’ll listen long as I am able
There’s nowhere I’d rather be

Secret fears, the supernatural
Thank God for this new laughter
Thank God the joke’s on me

We’ve seen the landfill rainbow
We’ve seen the junkyard of love
Baby it’s no place for you and me

I was born to laugh
I learned to laugh through my tears
I was born to love
I’m gonna learn to love without fear

Transcript of Osama bin Laden’s Tape

I came across a PDF transcript of Osama bin Laden’s latest tape, and thought I would reproduce it here for your general benefit. The translation into English isn’t always very smooth, so some passages may require re-reading.

Before the transcript begins, allow me a brief explanation as to why I am providing this:
1) Americans should never fear an idea. Ours is the heritage of ideas that have conquered the world, not by sheer force of arms, but by the strength and nobility of our concepts. Freedom, democracy, equality, capitalism, church/state separation - these ideas are the birthright of man, and they are among the greatest gifts God has ever given humankind.
2) Call it what you will, but we are in the midst of a war with this man. What you will find below, for all its numerous faults, will be regarded by history as an important piece of the literature of this period. It is incumbent upon all who would seek to understand the times in which they live to understand first the people and their motives who shape these times.
3) I want to highlight the intrinsic contradictions in his statement. Though the transcript is provided without intertwined commentary, read it with a careful eye. Read it more than once. See if you can spot places where he makes contradictory statements. Where does the truth of his opinion lie? What are his stated goals? What are his implicitly admitted goals? How do these two goal-sets contradict?
4) I want to highlight the danger in what he hopes for. Allow your imagination to create bin Laden’s perfect world - a world united by an Islamic government exercising sharia law; and once created, see if you can discover what problems this world will face. What pressures will exert themselves upon it? What corruptions? What will eventually destroy this world system, and what will be the result afterward? At one point, Osama declares that “Muslim blood shall not be spilled with impunity”; and yet, the majority of violence in Iraq is occurring between warring Muslim sects. As you read the statement, consider what Osama might mean by words like “Muslim,” “Islam,” “faithful,” and “believer.” Are these words what they appear to be, or are they being employed deceptively?
5) I want you to see that there are a very few places - but a few nonetheless - where he makes a persuasive argument. There are 67,000 Jews in Morocco, and 8 million Christians in Egypt (including the Coptics) - both are mentioned in Osama’s statement; why haven’t they been major targets for terrorist activity? He mentions the Muslim belief that Judaism and Christianity are cousins of Islam, and that their faithful adherents are deserving of respect; is it possible that our religious offensiveness (which cannot be denied) is not al-Qaida’s principal motivation?
- Steve

All praise is due to Allah, who built the heavens and earth in justice, and created man as a favor and grace from Him. And from His ways is that the days rotate between the people, and from His Law is retaliation in kind: an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth and the killer is killed. And all praise is due to Allah, who awakened his slaves’ desire for the Garden, and all of them will enter it except those who refuse. And whoever obeys Him alone in all of his affairs will enter the Garden, and whoever disobeys Him will have refused.

As for what comes after: Peace be upon he who follows the Guidance. People of America: I shall be speaking to you on important topics which concern you, so lend me your ears. I begin by discussing the war which is between us and some of its repercussions for us and you.

To preface, I say: Despite America being the greatest economic power and possessing the most powerful and up-to-date military arsenal as well; and despite it spending on this war and its army more than the entire world spends on its armies; and despite it being the major state influencing the policies of the world, as if it has a monopoly on the unjust right of veto; despite all of this, 19 young men were able - by the grace of Allah, the Most High - to change the direction of its compass. And in fact, the subject of the Mujahideen has become an inseparable part of the speech of your leader, and the effects and signs of that are not hidden.

Since the 11th, many of America’s policies have come under the influence of the Mujahideen, and that is by the grace of Allah, the Most High. And as a result, the people discovered the truth about it, its reputation worsened, its prestige was broken globally and it was bled dry economically, even if our interests overlap with the interests of the major corporations and also with those of the neoconservatives, despite the differing intentions.

And as for your information media, during the first years of the war, lost its credibility and manifested itself as a tool of the colonialist empires, and its condition has often been worse than the condition of the media of the dictatorial regimes which march in the caravan of the single leader.

Then Bush talks about his working with al-Maliki and his government to spread freedom in Iraq but in fact he is working with the leaders of one sect against another sect, in the belief that this will quickly decide the war in his favor.

And thus, what is called the civil war came into being and matters worsened at his hands before getting out of his control and him becoming like the one who plows and sows in the sea: he harvests nothing but failure.

So these are some of the results of the freedom about whose spreading he is talking to you. And then the backtracking of Bush on his insistence on not giving the United Nations expanded jurisdiction in Iraq is an implicit admission of his loss and defeat there.

And among the most important items contained in Bush’s speeches since the events of the 11th is that the Americans have no option but to continue the war. This tone is in fact an echoing of the words of neoconservatives like Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Richard Pearle, the latter having said previously that the Americans have no choice in front of them other than to continue the war or face a holocaust.

I say, refuting this unjust statement, that the morality and culture of the holocaust is your culture, not our culture. In fact, burning living beings is forbidden in our religion, even if they be small like the ant, so what of man?! The holocaust of the Jews was carried out by your brethren in the middle of Europe, but had it been closer to our countries, most of the Jews would have been saved by taking refuge with us. And my proof for that is in what your brothers, the Spanish, did when they set up the horrible courts of the Inquisition to try Muslims and Jews, when the Jews only found safe shelter by taking refuge in our countries. And that is why the Jewish community in Morocco today is one of the largest communities in the world. They are alive with us and we have not incinerated them, but we are a people who don’t sleep under oppression and reject humiliation and disgrace, and we take revenge on the people of tyranny and aggression, and the blood of the Muslims will not be spilled with impunity, and the morrow is nigh for he who awaits.

Also, your Christian brothers have been living among us for 14 centuries; in Egypt alone, there are millions of Christians whom we have not incinerated and shall not incinerate. But the fact is, there is a continuing and biased campaign being waged against us for a long time now by your politicians and many of your writers by way of your media, especially Hollywood, for the purpose of misrepresenting Islam and its adherents to drive you away from the true religion. The genocide of peoples and their holocaust took place at your hands; only a few specimins of Red Indians were spared, and just a few days ago, the Japanese observed the 62nd anniversary of the annihilation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by your nuclear weapons.

And among the things which catch the eye of the one who considers the repercussions of your unjust war against Iraq is the failure of your democratic system, despite it raising of the slogans of justice, liberty, equality, and humanitarianism. It has not only failed to achieve these things, it has actually destroyed these with its weapons - especially in Iraq and Afghanistan - in a brazen fashion, to replace them with fear, destruction, killing, hunger, displacement and more than a million orphans in Baghdad alone, not to mention hundreds of thousands of widows. Americans statistics speak of the killing of more than 650,000 of the people of Iraq as a result of the war and its repercussions.

People of America: the world is following your news in regards to your invasion of Iraq, for people have recently come to know that, after several years of the tragedies of this war, the vast majority of you want it stopped. Thus, you elected the Democratic Party for this purpose, but the Democrats haven’t made a move worth mentioning. On the contrary, they continue to agree to the spending of tens of billions to continue the killing and war there, which has led to the vast majority of you being afflicted with disappointment.

And here is the gist of the matter, so one should pause, think and reflect: Why have the Democrats failed to stop this war, despite them being the majority?

I will come back to reply to this question after raising another question, which is:

Why are the leaders of the White House keen to start wars and wage them around the world, and make use of every possible opportunity through which they can reach this purpose, occasionally even creating justifications based on deception and blatant lies, as you saw in Iraq?

In the Vietnam War, the leaders of the White House claimed at the time that it was a necessary and crucial war, and during it, Rumsfeld and his aides murdered two million villagers. And when Kennedy took over the presidency and deviated from the general line of policy drawn up for the White House and wanted to stop this unjust war, that angered the owners of the major corporations who were benefiting from its continuation.

And so Kennedy was killed, and al-Qaida wasn’t present at that time, but rather, those corporations were the primary beneficiary from his killing. And the war continued after that for approximately one decade. But after it became clear to you that it was an unjust and unnecessary war, you made one of your greatest mistakes, in that you neither brought to account nor punished those who waged this war, not even the most violent of its murderers, Rumsfeld. And even more incredible than that is that Bush picked him as secretary of defense in his first term after picking Cheney as his vice-president, Powell as his secretary of state and Armitage as Powell’s deputy, despite their horrific and bloody history of murdering humans. So that was the clear signal that his administration - the administration of the generals - didn’t have as its main concern the serving of humanity, but rather, was interested in bringing about new massacres. Yet in spite of that, you permitted Bush to complete his first term, and stranger still, chose him for a second term, which gave him a clear mandate from you - with your full knowledge and consent - to continue to murder our people in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Then you claim to be innocent! This innocence of yours is like my innocence of the blood of your sons on the 11th - were I to claim such a thing. But it is impossible for me to humor any of you in the arrogance and indifference you show for the lives of humans outside America, or for me to humor your leaders in their lying, as the entire world knows they have the lion’s share of that. These morals aren’t our morals. What I want to emphasize here is that not taking past war criminals to account led to them repeating that crime of killing humanity without right and waging this unjust war in Mesopotamia, and as a result, here are the oppressed ones today continuing to take their right from you.

This war is entirely unnecessary, as testified by your own reports. And among the most capable of those on your own side who speak to you is Noam Chomsky, who spoke sober words of advice prior to the war, but the leader of Texas doesn’t like those who give advice. The entire world came out in unprecedented demonstrations to warn against waging the war and describe its true nature in eloquent terms like “no to spilling red blood for black oil,” yet he paid them no heed. It is time for humankind to know that talk of the rights of man and freedom are lies produced by the White House and its allies in Europe to deceive humans, take control of their destinies and subjugate them.

So in answer to questions about the Democrats’ failure to stop the war, I say: they are the same reasons which led to the former president Kennedy to stop the Vietnam War. Those with real power and influence are those with the most capital. And since the democratic system permits major corporations to back candidates, be they presidential or congressional, there shouldn’t be any cause for astonishment - and there isn’t any - in the Democrats’ failure to stop the war. And you’re the ones who have the saying which goes, “Money talks.” And I tell you: after the failure of your representatives in the Democratic Party to implement your desire to stop the war, you can still carry anti-war placards and spread out in the streets of major cities, then go back to your homes, but that will be of no use and will lead to the prolonging of the war.

However, there are two solutions for stopping it. The first is from our side, and it is to continue to escalate the killing and fighting against you. This is our duty, and our brothers are carrying it out, and I ask Allah to grant them resolve and victory. And the second solution is from your side. It has now become clear to you and the entire world the impotence of the democratic system and how it plays with the interests of the peoples and their blood by sacrificing soldiers and populations to achieve the interests of the major corporations.

And with that, it has become clear to all that they are the real tyrannical terrorists. In fact, the life of all mankind is in danger because of the global warming resulting to a large degree from the emissions of the factories of the major corporations, yet despite that, the representative of these corporations in the White House insists on not observing the Kyoto accord, with the knowledge that the statistic speaks of the death and displacement of millions of human beings because of that, especially in Africa. This greatest of plagues and most dangerous of threats to the lives of humans is taking place in an accelerating fashion as the world is being dominated by the democratic system, which confirms its massive failure to protect humans and their interests from the greed and avarice of the major corporations and their representatives.

And despite this brazen attack on the people, the leaders of the West - especially Bush, Blair, Sarkozy, and Brown - still talk about freedom and human rights with a flagrant disregard for the intellects of human beings. So is there a form of terrorism clearer, stronger, and more dangerous than this? This is why I tell you: as you liberated yourselves from the slavery of monks, kings and feudalism, you should liberate yourselves from the deception, shackles, and attrition of the capitalist system.

If you were to ponder it well, you would find that in the end, it is a system harsher and fiercer than your systems in the Middle Ages. The capitalist system seeks to turn the entire world into a fiefdom of the major corporations under the label of “globalization” in order to protect democracy.

And Iraq and Afghanistan and their tragedies; and the reeling of many of you under the burden of interest-related debts, insane taxes and real estate mortgages; global warming and its woes; and the abject poverty and tragic hunger in Africa; all of this is but one side of the grim face of this global system.

So it is imperative that you free yourselves from all of that and search for an alternative, upright methodology in which it is not the business of any class of humanity to lay down its own laws to its own advantage at the expense of other classes as is the case with you, since the essence of man-made positive laws is that they serve the interests of those with capital and thus make the rich richer and the poor poorer.

The infallible methodology is the methodology of Allah, the Most High, who created the heavens and earth and created the Creation and is the Most Kind and All-Informed and the Knower of the souls of His slaves and the methodology that best suits them.

You believe with absolute certainty that you believe in Allah, and you are full of conviction of this belief, so much so that you have written this belief of yours on your dollar.

But the truth is that you are mistaken in this belief of yours. The impartial judge knows that belief in Allah requires straightness in the following of His methodology, and accordingly, total obedience must lie to the orders and prohibitions of Allah Alone in all aspects of life.

So how about you when you associate others with Him in your beliefs and separate state from religion, then claim that you are believers?!

What you have done is clear loss and manifest polytheism. And I will give you a parable of polytheism, as parables summarize and clarify speech.

I tell you: Its parable is the parable of the man who owns a shop and hires a worker and tells him, “Sell and give me the money.” But he makes sales and gives the money to someone other than the owner. So who of you would approve that?

You believe that Allah is your Lord and your Creator and the Creator of this earth and that it is His property, then you work on His earth and His property without His orders and without obeying Him, and you legislate in contradiction to His Law and methodology.

This work of yours is the greatest form of polytheism and is rebellion against obedience to Allah with which the believer becomes an unbeliever, even if he obeys Allah in some of His other orders. Allah, the Most High, sent down His orders in His sacred books like the Torah and the Evangel and sent with them the Messengers (Allah’s prayers and peace be upon them) as bearers of good news to the people.

And everyone who believes in them and complies with them is a believer from the people of the Garden. Then when the men of knowledge altered the words of Allah, the Most High, and sold them for a paltry price, as the rabbis did with the Torah and the monks with the Evangel, Allah sent down His final book, the magnificent Quran, and safeguarded it from being added to or subtracted from by the hands of men, and in it is a complete methodology for the lives of all people.

And our holding firm to this magnificent book is the secret of our strength and winning of the war against you despite the fewness of our numbers and material.

And if you would like to know some of the reasons for your losing of the war against us, then read the book of Michael Scheuer in this regard.

Don’t be turned away from Islam by the terrible situation of the Muslims today, for our rulers in general turned away from Islam many decades ago, but our forefathers were leaders and pioneers of the world for many centuries, when they held firmly to Islam.

And before concluding, I tell you: there has been an increase in the thinkers who study events and happenings, and on the basis of their study, they have declared the approach of the collapse of the American Empire.

Among them is the European thinker who anticipated the fall of the Soviet Union, which indeed fell. And it would benefit you to read about what comes after the empire in regard to the United States of America. I also want to bring to your attention that among the greatest reasons for the collapse of the Soviet Union was their being afflicted with their leader Brezhnev, who was overtaken by pride and arrogance and refused to look at the facts on the ground. From the first year of the Afghanistan invasion, reports indicated that the Russians were losing the war, but he refused to acknowledge this, lest it go down in his personal history as a defeat, even though refusal to acknowledge defeat not only doesn’t do anything to change the facts for thinking people, but also exacerbates the problem and increases the losses. And how similar is your position today to their position two decades ago. The mistakes of Brezhnev are being repeated by Bush, who - when asked about the date of his withdrawing of forces from Iraq - said in effect that the withdrawal will not be during his reign, but rather, during the reign of the one who succeeds him. And the significance of these words is not hidden.

And here I say: It would benefit you to listen to the poignant messages of your soldiers in Iraq, who are paying - with their blood, nerves, and scattered limbs - the price for these sorts of irresponsible statements. Among them is the eloquent message of Joshua which he sent by way of the media, in which he wipes the tears from his eyes and describes American politicans in harsh terms and invites them to join him there for a few days. Perhaps his message will find you in an attentive ear so you can rescue him and more than 150,000 of your sons there who are tasting the two bitterest things:

If they leave their barracks, the mines devour them, and if they refuse to leave, rulings are passed against them. Thus, the only options left in front of them are to commit suicide or cry, both of which are from the severest of afflictions. So is there anything men can do after crying and killing themselves to make you respond to them? They are doing that out of the severity of the humiliation, fear and terror which they are suffering. It is severer than what the slaves used to suffer at your hands centuries ago, and it is as if some of them have gone from one slavery to another slavery more severe and harmful, even if it be in the fancy dress of the Defense Department’s financial enticements.

So do you feel the greatness of their sufferings?

To conclude, I invite you to embrace Islam, for the greatest mistake one can make in this world and one which is uncorrectable is to die while not surrendering to Allah, the Most High, in all aspects of one’s life - i.e., to die outside of Islam. And Islam means gain for you in this first life and the next, final life. The true religion is a mercy for people in their lives, filling their hearts with serenity and calm.

There is a message for you in the Mujahideen: the entire world is in pursuit of them, yet their hearts, by the grace of Allah, are satisfied and tranquil. The true religion also puts people’s lives in order with its laws; protects their needs and interests; refines their morals; protects them from evils; and guarantees for them entrance into Paradise in the hereafter through their obedience to Allah and sincere worship of Him Alone.

And it will also achieve your desire to stop the war as a consequence, because as soon as the warmongering owners of the major corporations realize that you have lost confidence in your democratic system and begun to search for an alternative, and that this alternative is Islam, they will run after you to please you and achieve what you want to steer you away from Islam. So your true compliance with Islam will deprive them of the opportunity to defraud the peoples and take their money under numerous pretexts, like arms deals and so on.

There are no taxes in Islam, but rather there is a limited Zakaat [alms] totaling only 2.5%. So beware of the deception of those with the capital. And with your earnest reading about Islam from its pristine sources, you will arrive at an important truth, which is that the religion of all the Prophets (peace and blessings of Allah be upon them) is one, and that its essence is submission to the orders of Allah Alone in all aspects of life, even if their Shari’ahs [Laws] differ.

And did you know that the name of the Prophet of Allah Jesus and his mother (peace and blessings of Allah be on them both) are mentioned in the Noble Quran dozens of times, and that in the Quran there is a chapter whose name is “Maryam,” i.e. Mary daughter of ‘Imran and mother of Jesus (peace and blessings of Allah be upon them both)? It tells the story of her becoming pregnant with the Prophet of Allah Jesus (peace and blessings of Allah be upon them both), and in its confirmation of her chastity and purity, in contrast to the fabrications of the Jews against her. Whoever wishes to find out for himself must listen to the verse of this magnificent chapter; one of the just kings of the Christians - the Negus - listened to some of its verses and his eyes welled up with tears and he said something which should be reflected on for a long time by those sincere in their search for the truth.

He said, “Verily, this and what Jesus brought come from one lantern”; i.e. that the magnificent Quran and the Evangel are both from Allah, the Most High; and every just and intelligent one of you who reflects on the Quran will definitely arrive at this truth. It also must be noted that Allah has preserved the Quran from the alterations of men. And reading in order to become acquainted with Islam only requires a little effort, and those of you who are guided will profit greatly. And peace be upon he who follows the Guidance.

Stopping by for a moment…

Howdy guys. Things are VERY busy around here. After only one week, law school has become a roughly 50 hr/week job…and I anticipate my hours will only go up as the semester progresses. But I’m sure you’re wondering how I’m doing, and what’s up with me, so here goes:

  • I’m getting quite a lot of practice in writing case briefs. Quite a LOT.
  • When I’m not in class and I’m not studying for class or sleeping, I seem to be in a constant stream of meetings about…well, everything.
  • I joined a legal fraternity - Phi Alpha Delta.
  • My old phone (RAZR V3xx, aka the IZAR) wasn’t keeping up very well with the amount of scheduling/tasking that I was attempting to use it for, so I got a new phone to help out with that.
  • A couple of nights ago, I accidentally left my car unlocked. Radar detector, iPod Shuffle, and tape adapter, I will miss you. (Especially my iPod - it had a Nietzsche quote on it! Who else would even LIKE a NietzschePod?)

Well, that’s all I got time for, folks. I’ll update again soon.

Jitters

Okay, I admit it. I lied. The next substantive post after that one wasn’t this one. My apologies for that; but all I can say is that I simply wasn’t ready to write this until now.

Right now, it’s 3:20am on the day my law school orientation begins, and I can’t sleep. I’ve been trying for over two hours. I toss, I turn, I think, I worry…but I don’t sleep. Coffee would probably knock me out, but I fear its unpleasant natural side-effects just a few hours before one of the most important days of my life. You know what I mean.

I don’t exactly know what to expect, and that worries me. I don’t mean I don’t know what to expect from the orientation…I have a schedule, and it seems that I can reasonably expect a fair mix of hurried instruction, interesting information, and dreadful boredom. No…what I mean is that I don’t know what to expect from this step, this stage of life. I’ve mentioned before - probably more than once - that this is a metamorphic period for me. I’ve spent the last few years in a relative stasis. Sure, I learned and I worked…but mostly, I rested. I needed recuperation from things that had always been a part of my life, and in Walnut Ridge I found my Walden Pond. And while Walnut Ridge has its share of problems, it will always hold a special place in my heart.

But that’s the past now. The present finds me in Fayetteville. In law school. In training to become a high-powered professional. Responsibility doesn’t scare me, nor does the stress of the occupation I’m endeavoring to undertake (though it probably should). In truth, I’m not really scared of anything at all…and THAT worries me a little. Is it possible that my efforts to effect a transformation from immature, chaotic irresponsibility to calm, reliable adulthood were more successful than even I realized? I suppose that’s a question that can only be answered by the sure and steady hand of time.

Thus only one question is left: Why can’t I sleep? I’m not defending a dissertation tomorrow. All I have are a series of meetings and a couple of classes. When I really stop and think about everything, I’m NOT scared, I’m NOT worried, I’m NOT stressed in the slightest. I should just lie down and sack out.

Here’s hoping it works this time.

Waking up.

I’ve never seen a single moment of the show “My So-Called Life.” From what I’m told, it’s fantastic; and I imagine that if I picked it up on DVD, I’d thoroughly enjoy it. It’s honestly a little strange to me that I’ve never seen it, as it aired in a prime TV-viewing time for me (not to mention that I’ve pretty much always thought Claire Danes is one of the most beautiful women ever).

But that’s not really what this post is about. I ran across the DVD of My So-Called Life on videoeta.com a little while ago, and when I saw it I became transfixed by the memories of all the things that were going on in my life at that time…things I enjoyed, things I didn’t enjoy, things I’m proud of, things I regret. The whole myriad of human existence and emotion is played out in all of our lives, given a long enough span of time; and staring at Claire Danes’ face on the cover of the DVD, I was transported through just such a recollection.

I asked myself if missing the series is something I regret, which naturally led me to wonder just how much of that period of my life I do regret. I’m not someone who’s always dealt well with the ever-present knowledge that I’m smarter and wiser than I was yesterday, because I’m the kind of person who looks back on yesterday and says, “Why couldn’t I have just realized that then?” It’s a cycle of shame and regret that operates on many people, and I think the chief end of this cycle is to keep one in a permanent state of distraction. In other words, I find that I get so caught up in wishing I could change the past that I hardly pay attention to the present.

My favorite quote from the movie Elizabethtown is this: “I think I’ve been asleep most of my life.” That’s as accurate a summation as I could ever create for what I think about myself. It’s not just the mistakes of the past; it’s also the relentless analysis and obsession over those mistakes, which are done and can never be undone because they exist only in my memory now, that has caused me to stay asleep so long.

Well I don’t know about you, fair reader…but as for me and my house, I’m ready to wake up. I’m ready to allow myself to make mistakes. I’m ready to forgive myself for what I’ve done in the past. I’m ready to look ahead, to look around, to simply look instead of closing my eyes tight.

I’m ready to live. I hope you are too.

The Briefest of Updates

I promise that I have not forgotten about my new blog. I’m working on a post in my head* about my experience with law school nervousness; but it’s taking longer than I expected. Nevertheless, I expect it to be my next substantive post to this blog, and I expect it to be available to you fine people in the next two days.

Until then, God bless, and have a wonderful day.

*Yes, I’m one of THOSE people, who writes things into nearly final-draft form entirely in their head, and then simply lets their brain dictate to their fingers what should go on paper. Not only that, but every formal endeavor I’ve applied myself to has received commendation and praise for my writing style and ability. Aren’t you jealous? ;)

The Sacred Lobotomy Story

If you’re expecting this post to be as shocking as the ultimate reveal of Lost, then I’d like to dash those expectations right now. This post will probably not come as a surprise to the two or three of you that actually read Sacred Lobotomy. But just in case I’ve accidentally left unanswered questions, I’ll take the time now to clear up any remaining confusion. If this post generates more questions, please post them in the comments and I will either answer them there, or (if necessary) I will create a follow-up post to this one.

Q: What was Sacred Lobotomy?
A: Many things. At first, it was simply a blog, and it housed pretty standard blog-fare - personal observations, random BS, etc; and there is a sense in which it was simply a blog for its entire existence. But when I renamed it and gave it a domain, I decided to (not-too-secretly) make one more change to it. I decided to turn it into a publicly-accessible laboratory for the questions that centrally occupied my mind. I thought that by journaling the experiments themselves, and involving my meager audience as a crucial environmental factor, I could arrive at the answers.

Q: What questions?
A: The central question that the blog eventually became focused with is probably best put like this: What thoughts merit expression? You see, we all have a filter ingrained in us in early childhood - “express this thought,” “do not express that thought.” By the time we’ve reached puberty, this filter operates on a purely unconscious level. The primary focus of this filter is social acceptability; in other words, we express thoughts that we believe others will find normal (a finding that rewards us perennially insecure humans with the great goal of acceptance), and we do not express thoughts that others will find abnormal (a finding which would rob us of our coveted acceptance). Even when we express differing opinions or our own personal quirks, we do so in the language of acceptance; and even this furthers the goal of social acceptance, since all humans understand that we all have our own quirks, and to ridicule someone’s quirk is to draw negative attention to your own.

This is all common-sense to any reasonable person, even if this is something that is never discussed outside the realm of academic sociology journals. But what sort of criteria is social acceptability? Is it a criteria worth enforcing? Is social acceptance really a goal that should be so steadfastly sought? These questions were my obsession during the height of my activity with Sacred Lobotomy. It is fair to say that I probably carried my experiment too far on several occasions; and for that sin, I alone am to blame.

Q: But why? Why devote so much energy to questioning a principle that has universal acceptance?
A: Two things I’ve always been convinced of prompted me to take a regular blog and turn it into a living laboratory: 1) The conviction that the true rightness or wrongness of a thing must not in any way be conditioned upon its popularity, and 2) that I am, despite my lifelong reputation, entirely and utterly normal.

I don’t think the former requires any further elucidation, so I’ll skip it for now. By the latter, what I mean is that the things I’ve always believed were weird about me were probably also true for many, if not most, other people - in principle, if not in specificity. We all get angry and want to scream at a frustrating Wal-Mart teller; we all get depressed and wish we weren’t alive anymore; we all look at the sky and wonder if maybe, just maybe, our treasured beliefs are simply an ancient lie. I believe these things are true of everyone at one moment or another of their lives; but these are the kinds of things that are generally suppressed because they express vulnerability.

Vulnerability, not rejection, is the antithesis of social acceptance. Rejection is simply the negative of acceptance, and even bitter rejection carries with it a perversely comforting certainty. But certainty is exactly what is lacking in vulnerability. No emotion does more damage by its absence than certainty; and no emotional state is as feared and avoided as vulnerability.

With Sacred Lobotomy, I wanted to confront this state of affairs head on by making myself as vulnerable as I could to as much of the world as I could in a single place. I purposely avoided, as much as possible, expressing anything mundane; instead, I opted to express those things which were probably universally thought (at one time or another) but were certainly not universally expressed. In doing so, I also wanted to declare my eternal brotherhood with all who suffered privately with such thoughts.

Unfortunately, this noble aim was perverted by its practice. In my hands, nobility became ignoble; universality became exceptionalism; and vulnerability became a Howard Stern impersonation. As I said before, I alone bear full responsibility for this state of affairs; and I offer my sincerest apologies to all who may have been hurt by my efforts.

Q: What were the results of the experiment? Did you find your answers?
A:
No, I did not. The experiment was a failure, and I do not know why it failed so utterly. Perhaps the methodology of the experiment itself was fundamentally flawed; or perhaps the perversion of the experiment corrupted any data before it could be harvested; or perhaps the questions I sought to answer simply have no answers. It could be a combination of any or all of these factors, or it could be the fault of factors I haven’t considered. For all I know, the experiment was a success, but I was simply too stupid to see the answers in the data provided.

Q: Will this blog be a resurrection of some or all of the aims of Sacred Lobotomy?
A:
No…not intentionally, anyway. I will do my best to avoid posting content that is purely offensive (that is, content whose sole value is derived from the offense it causes). Though I make no absolute promises, I will endeavor to limit or eliminate any foul language from my posts. I will keep thoughts to myself if I think their expression would not be appropriate. I will not discuss matters that are properly considered my private business (i.e. no more posts about sex toys, etc).

But I am ME; and much of the content on Sacred Lobotomy was simply an expression of who I am as a person. So while I won’t be posting the transcript (as it were) of any psychiatric episodes I may experience, I don’t promise that I won’t mention, at least in passing, that such an episode has occurred, if I feel that communicating the information is relevant to my readers in some way.

Well, there you have it, ladies and gentleman. As I said above, any further questions can be addressed in the comments, unless it becomes necessary to create a follow-up post. If you have a message solely for me, please contact me directly. My contact information can be found on Facebook.

Hello there.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve maintained a blog, so forgive me if I’m a bit rusty.

First things first: this blog will not be a resurrection of Sacred Lobotomy. That blog served its purpose and has been discarded; its ultimate deletion was as necessary for me, personally, as were its creation and maintenance. Sacred Lobotomy was at times rude, crass, and mean-spirited; it was, by and large, a written expression of my thought life as it flowed from moment to moment. Whatever shape this blog ends up taking, it will most certainly not be a recreation of that experiment. I’ll speak more about this, though, in another post.

Second things second: This blog is likely to experience a long period of visual redesign. My PHP and CSS knowledge is buried so deep in my memory that it’s possible it cannot be forcibly resurfaced; in other words, I may have to re-learn how to do site design by trial and error right here before your eyes. Because of this likely outcome, I beg now for your patience later.

Finally, an explanation: I’ve started a new blog because I’m taking this opportunity to turn a new leaf in many areas of my life. This period of metamorphosis is likely to be rocky at times, but I sincerely believe it will be ultimately beneficial. This may all sound cryptic now, but I assure you that I’m not speaking in code. Trust me on this: if you read these humble journalings of mine, you will bear witness to the significance of the changes being wrought in me.

Thanks for stopping by, and I look forward to seeing you around here in the future.
